Three dentists included in delayed Birthday Honours list

The Queen’s Birthday Honours list, delayed from June, has been published and includes those whose work during the Covid-19 response is recognised. These include Derek Maguire from Northern Ireland who becomes an OBE. Appointed MBE are GDP and Professor Simon Wright as well as Professor and Consultant in Paediatric Dentistry, Helen Rodd.

Dr Derek Maguire, who has been appointed OBE, qualified as a dentist in July 1987 from Queen’s University Belfast and two years later acquired the practice in Bridge St, Portadown. Over the following 30 years, he has grown the practice from 2 dental chairs to 11, and now has over 19,000 registered NHS patients – making it the largest General Dental Practice in Northern Ireland.
In recent years, Derek spends his time in a variety of roles, including as a part- time Dental Adviser with the Health and Social Care Board, Non-Executive Member of the Northern Ireland Medical and Dental training Agency Board. He holds Fellowship to the Faculty of Dental Surgery with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow, Fellowship to the Faculty of General Dental Practice with the Royal College of Surgeons of England, and Fellowship to the Faculty of Dental Trainers with the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.
Professor Helen Rodd, a Consultant in Paediatric Dentistry at the University of Sheffield’s School of Clinical Dentistry, has been appointed MBE for her commitment to putting the needs of children at the heart of oral health research, and for her services to NHS dentistry.
If the voice of the child is now routinely heard in the planning and delivery of UK children’s dental services, it is undoubtedly down to Professor Rodd’s leadership. She has changed the culture of research in this area, prioritising the child’s perspective and experience. Through her commitment to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, and specialist clinical training, Helen has mentored and enthused thousands of oral health professionals.
Professor Simon Wright, who has been appointed MBE, is the principal partner of the Glencairn Dental group of practices, and is one of the founding Directors of the ICE Hospital and Postgraduate Training Centre. He has won awards for his research papers, and has a personal chair at the University of Salford (UoS), awarded for his practice and teaching in Dental Implantology. He passionately believes that teaching dentistry is a practical discipline and all of the courses at ICE/ UoS have a large clinical component, including the MSc in Dental Implantology and the PG Cert in Nonsurgical Facial Aesthetics.
Prof Wright has a keen interest in surgical performance and patient safety. He has established, and is Chairman of The National Advisory Board in Human Factors (NABHF). This is multidisciplinary group that brings together the views of the regulators, the profession and academics with an aim of improving patient safety and the wellbeing of dental teams. It is his teaching and research into Human Factors that has gained him an MBE in the 2020 Birthday Honours list.
