Birmingham Dental School to be demolished?

A report in the Birmingham Post says that new plans could see Birmingham Dental Hospital demolished and replaced with a new building and satellite clinics in a £585million project. Health authority chiefs from West Midlands have called for plans that went to public consultation more than four years ago to be revisited and for the scheme to be set moving again.

The report says that the latest business case suggests building a new hospital and school of dentistry on disused land in Selly Oak, next to Birmingham University campus, would be the best option.
A dentistry report also details how the ageing 10-storey Dental Hospital, in Whittall Street, city centre, which was built in 1963, is inadequate with cramped facilities and an inflexible layout, due to large concrete pillars, which hinders modern dental and teaching services and has no expansion potential. It even states that if there is no redevelopment, it is likely the Dental Hospital and School will close.
It has to be said, however, that this report has not been confirmed. To read the newspaper article click here
