All change at the Faculty Board of FGDP(UK)

Last Friday [June 15th] Mick Horton handed over the reins of the Faculty of General Dental Practice FGDP(UK) to the incoming dean, Ian Mills. Two new vice-deans were also elected, Onkar Dhanoya and Mark Richardson. Earlier last week two new members were elected to the board of the Faculty for the next three years, Suzanne Sykes, (South West division), and Andrew Parashchak, (Mersey & North West division).

Ian Mills works in general dental practice in North Devon. He is a Fellow of the Faculty and previously held the post senior vice-dean. He qualified from Glasgow University in 1987 and spent the early part of his career working in maxillofacial surgery. In 1994 he moved to Devon and three years later set up Torrington Dental Practice, a mixed practice in North Devon, where he continues to work as a partner. He joined the Faculty in 1994, and is a holder of its Diploma in Implant Dentistry.

Mick Horton had been dean of the Faculty since June 2015. He qualified from Manchester University in 1986, initially working in Fleetwood, Lancashire. In 1992, he purchased a mixed NHS/private practice in Caergwrle, North Wales, where he continues to be practice Principal. Mick has been a member of the Faculty since 1994 and has held various positions in the FGDP(UK), including chair of the Education Committee, research director and divisional director for North Wales Division.

At the Board meeting two new vice-deans were elected. Onkar Dhanoya is the Board member for the Yorkshire & Northern region. He graduated from Newcastle University in 1985 and has been principal dental at Honour Health since 1986. He was awarded a Fellowship by The FGDP (UK) in 2015, and became a Fellow of The International College of Dentists in 2017. He is Chair of North Tyne LDC, member of BDA English Council and GDPC.

The other vice-dean is Mark Richardson, the Board member for the Wessex & Oxford region. He graduated from Dundee University in Dec 1988 and has served over 28yrs as a dental officer in the RAF. He has attained MGDS RCS and FFGDP and following completion of MSc in Paedodontic Dentistry was appointed the Armed Forces Clinical Adviser in this discipline. Mark was elected on to the Board in 2016 and is also a CQC Specialist Advisor.

Earlier in the week two new members were elected to the board of the FGDP(UK) for the next three years. Suzanne Sykes, who works within Community Dental Services in Devon, has been elected to represent the Faculty’s South West division, and Andrew Parashchak, who practises in Wigan and Rochdale, is the new member for the Mersey & North West division. Qualifying from Cardiff in 2009, Ms Sykes served for seven years as a dentist in the Royal Navy, later working in NHS practice and out-of-hours services in Devon before moving to CDS.

Mr Parashchak completed a BSc in Biomedical Sciences and an MSc in Immunology and Immunogenetics before studying for his BDS at Peninsula Dental School, from where he graduated 2012. After working as a general dental practitioner within the NHS, he moved into private practice three years ago. He recently bought his own practice in Rochdale, and still works part-time as an associate in Wigan.

Jonathan Farmer has also been re-elected to represent Trent & East Anglia. Working mainly in general dental practice since 1988, he currently practises in Lincoln, has a special interest in endodontics, and has worked for the salaried dental service.
