Steve McCabe MP for Birmingham Selly oak continued his probing of Health Ministers with questions on the costs of hospitalisation for extractions and the need to improve oral health. Two Conservative MPs questioned ministers about the failures of Capita.

Steve McCabe Labour MP for Birmingham, Selly Oak asked how much was spent on emergency dentistry in hospitals in each year from 2010 to 2016. He was told by minister David Mowat that such data was not held.

He received a more positive answer when he asked how much has been spent on child tooth extraction in hospitals in each year since 2010. Steve McCabe MP also asked how many local authorities in England provide or commission an oral health improvement programme; and what estimate he has made of the funds committed to such programmes by local authorities in England in each of the last three financial years.

Minister David Mowat replied that oral health improvement was the responsibility of local authorities. Oral health improvement services are often commissioned as part of other health improvement programmes and so it is not always possible to disaggregate the specific oral health improvement element and give accurate numbers of funds committed.

Steve McCabe MP then asked the Communities and Local Government minister how many local authorities in England provide or commission an oral health improvement programme; and what estimate he has made of the funds committed to such programmes by local authorities in England in each of the last three financial years.

He received a reply from a junior minister in the Department, Marcus Jones, which said that his department did not collect this information. Local councils are funded to deliver a wide range of services and it is for them to determine how best to deliver those services for the benefit of their local residents.

Both Oliver Colville Conservative MP for Plymouth, Sutton and Devonport and Nicholas Soames, Conservative MP for Mid Sussex as what steps the Department of Health was taking to ensure that Capita improves its performance relating to the processing of dental performer list applications and what assessment they had made of the performance of Capita in administrating the National Dental Performers' List.

Minister David Mowat replied that NHS England was meeting with Capita on a weekly basis to oversee the delivery of its plans for the Dental Performers Lists and other key services and to ensure the right improvements are in place to address the backlogs and delays. In addition the minister for public health, Nicola Blackwood MP was continuing to work directly with Capita and NHS England to ensure that services are restored to an acceptable and sustainable standard. In addition, Mr Mowat acknowledged that delays to dental performers being added to the Dental Performers List had affected dental practitioners and their businesses.
