New Directors join BOS

Specialist orthodontist Guy Deeming (pictured) has joined the British Orthodontic Society (BOS) Board of Trustees as Director of Clinical Practice and Professor Philip Benson as Director of Research. Welcoming both men onto the Board, President Alison Murray said: “We are very glad to have them working at Board level on some of the more critical issues that face us. I know we are going to value their expertise.”
Guy’s remit is the clinical practice of orthodontics across all settings, primarily within the NHS. With the imminent round of re-procurement for orthodontic contracts, the coming year is a critical one. Practice-owning members of the British Orthodontic Society may have to re-tender for their orthodontic contracts while other members may want to tender for a contract for the first time. Both groups will be looking to BOS for support. He will be expected to take the lead in both advising and supporting members as well as meeting with other stakeholders including NHS England, the BDA and the Office of the CDO.
Guy said: “There is no doubt that uncertainty over the future of orthodontic contracts is the most significant cause of anxiety amongst the orthodontic community. Specifically, the impact on patients should the process not be well managed and delivered is potentially great. The BOS will continue to negotiate and represent on behalf of members trying to deliver the very best for their patients.”
Professor Philip Benson joins BOS as Director of Research. He is Professor of Orthodontics and Honorary Consultant at the University of Sheffield and Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. He is a regional advisor to the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and a former Editor in Chief of the Journal of Orthodontics.
He said: “Understanding more about the treatment we provide, how it affects our patients and how we might deliver it more effectively is important for all clinicians and supporting research that provides new knowledge is a fundamental responsibility of the British Orthodontic Society. I am looking forward to my new role and, in particular, the opportunity to enable anyone in the society to contribute and benefit.”
