Three dental awards in New Year Honours

Three people in dentistry received MBEs in 2017 New Years Honours: Prof Liz Kay Foundation Dean, Peninsula Dental School and Sarah Murray Hygienist Therapist and Senior Lecturer, Institute of Dentistry, Queen Mary University of London. Peter Heasman, Professor of Periodontology at Newcastle Dental School has been awarded the British Empire Medal in the New Year’s Honours list for services to research ethics.
Professor Elizabeth Jane KAY Associate Dean for Equality and Inclusion and Foundation Dean, Peninsula Dental School. For services to Dental Education.
She is the Foundation Dean of Peninsula Dental School, having founded the first new dental school in the UK for 40 years. She is also a Public Health Academic Consultant working regionally and nationally with Public Health England, focussing on inequalities in Oral Health. She is Programme Lead for an MBA in Healthcare, in collaboration with Plymouth University Business School and Healthcare Learning Company.
Miss Sarah Marianne MURRAY Senior Lecturer, Head of Centre and Programme Lead, Institute of Dentistry, Queen Mary University of London. For services to Oral Health.
She is a clinical academic committed to providing high quality academic and clinical teaching within NHS and Higher Education environments. She has many years of experience of managing and teaching dental care professionals who are undertaking Diploma programmes in relation to Oral Health, with a registrable qualifications as Dental Hygienists and Dental Therapists. She is also currently managing and teaching the Certificate in Oral Health Education programme, which is a distance learning programme, primarily targeted towards qualified Dental Nurses who wish to expand their knowledge and skills. In 2003 she was recognised as a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and was awarded the title of ‘Hygienist of the Year’ in 2007. She works with a number of national organisations and professional bodies to promote dental hygienists and therapists both at undergraduate and post-registration level. From the dental school website: ‘Professor Heasman was appointed to the Newcastle and North Tyneside Research Ethics Committee in 1997 and was chair from 2000 until 2008. He also chaired the Northern and Yorkshire committee until his retirement in 2016. His involvement in research ethics has enabled him to provide advice to local University colleagues and NHS-based researchers both informally and formally through researcher training days, to which he also contributed on a national basis. He also chairs the UK Medical Devices Collaboration Group, an alliance which delivers improvements to the governance of safe medical device research.’
Professor Heasman said: “To say that this honour was a surprise is something of an understatement. It is an immense honour to receive such recognition. But the real appreciation goes to all those colleagues that I have worked with so closely over the last 20 years: REC members and managers, colleagues, trainers and all those at the HRA. It really has been an absolute privilege.”
New Years Honours - just two ??
Both excellent people and very well deserved indeed - good to see the contribution of Women in Dentistry being recognised more too - they have both dedicated DECADES to bettering our Profession !!The only negative is how few are awarded in Dentistry given the huge numbers of good people we have working tirelessly for others every day - I don't just mean the well known ones either!
Should such awards be properly vetted by a truly independent body in the public interest too?
That takes nothing away from Liz and Sarah which such a panel would undoubtedly have had them near the top of their listings too IMHO.
