New Birmingham dental school opens for patients

The first patients were welcomed into the new Birmingham Dental Hospital and School of Dentistry on March 31. Following completion of construction last month, a detailed plan has been implemented to ensure the smooth transition of both staff and equipment from the existing site to its new home in Edgbaston. Professor Phil Lumley, Head of the School of Dentistry said: “The facilities within the new building will be a state-of-the-art new home for our world-class teaching and research, as the next generation of dentists and dental specialists are trained here”.

The website Brumdentists commented: ‘The building is looking good but there is still a lot of unpacking to be done.  Boxes are still around the place being opened with the contents being emptied into shelves and drawers.  There are some hitches but these are quickly being sorted so that the Hospital and School are back to normal operating  status as quickly as possible.

‘People are genuinely excited looking into people’s offices and finding out what the clinics look like.  Where is the restaurant and the coffee shop, who is where and how many different ways can you get from the ground to the third floor. It will be a learning exercise for many of us as we use our SatNavs on our phones to navigate around the building.   Next week all the students return and the hospital and school will be really buzzing.

Professor Phil Lumley, Head of the School of Dentistry at the University of Birmingham said: “The facilities within the new building will be a state-of-the-art new home for our world-class teaching and research, as the next generation of dentists and dental specialists are trained here. As well as the first-class treatment carried out here for people from the city region and beyond, we will continue with our ground-breaking research to better understand oral and dental health and improve the lives of patients as a result.”
