Minister claims improved access to NHS dentistry

In answering a question from an MP, Health minister, Alistair Burt MP, claimed that 1.7 million more patients had accessed NHS dentistry compared with May 2010. He also said that the Government is committed to increasing access still further through reform of the dental contract to incentivise dentists to focus on prevention as well as treatment and, by seeing patients at intervals appropriate to their clinical need.

The Minister was replying to a Parliamentary Question by Andrew Bingham Conservative MP for High Peak, who had asked about the availability of NHS dentist places in his constituency as well as Derbyshire and Glossop Clinical Commissioning Groups in each of the last five years.

Burt said that NHS England was responsible for commissioning primary and secondary care dental services to meet local need and advises that oral health needs assessments for general dentistry are being conducted for areas that include Tameside and Glossop and Derbyshire.

He continued: “Overall, access continues to increase with the latest access data showing 30 million patients were seen by a dentist in the 24 month period ending 30 June 2015. This is 1.7 million more patients than May 2010. There is further to go, and this is why the Government is committed to increasing access still further through reform of the dental contract to incentivise dentists to focus on prevention as well as treatment and, by seeing patients at intervals appropriate to their clinical need, freeing up spaces for additional patients to be seen.”

Access Stats misleading?
The population itself has increased by nearly 2.5million between 2010 to 2015, so as a % NOTHING has improved.

There's just another 1million+ people without access since 2010 basically :(

Spin, Misleading the Public or Mendacity - which is it really?

It's time to publicly admit the nhs dental system in England is limited.

It's time to go Large in the Media to education the WHOLE population about dental prevention!

Anything else would be immoral IMHO.

Yours Clearly,

Tony.
