New CDO to speak at therapists conference

The new Chief Dental Officer (CDO) for England, Sara Hurley, is to join her predecessor, Barry Cockcroft, in a ‘past, present and future’ look at NHS dentistry. The pair will be discussing ‘What now?’ when they address delegates at the annual conference of the British Association of Dental Therapists (BADT) in Birmingham on Friday 25 September, the first day of the two-day event.

The duo will share the stage in the keynote address of the conference, with Barry Cockcroft reflecting on the progress already made in developing the DCP role in the delivery of NHS dentistry and Sara Hurley discussing the future role of dental therapists in its continued delivery. The two-handed presentation will explain some of the challenges that still need addressing, illustrate how the oral healthcare needs of the population are changing and how services will need to adapt accordingly.

Sara took up the role of CDO for England in July, having left her post with the Royal Centre for Defence Medicine earlier in the year. At the time of her appointment, she said: ‘I am determined to use this position to articulate the dental health needs of our patients and, working collaboratively across the breadth of the dental healthcare profession, present directly to Ministers and NHS leaders our fresh ideas; ideas that will contribute to achieving our shared goals of quality health outcomes and better oral health for all.'
