New Fitness to Practise panel members join GDC

The General Dental Council (GDC) has announced that 33 new Fitness to Practise (FtP) panel members joined the regulator on 27 August 2013. Nine dentists, 12 lay members and 11 dental care professionals were recruited and will now be phased into hearings through to the end of this year. They will sit on the Interim Orders, Professional Conduct, Health, Performance and Registration Appeals Committees.

Fitness to Practise Panellists are appointed by the GDC’s Appointments Committee. The Appointments Committee is an independent, non-executive committee of Council comprised of lay members and registrants (dentists and DCPs) with expertise in making appointments.
Fitness to Practise Panellist is a part time role, with members sitting for around 25 days a year for usually a minimum of 5 days at a time but frequently 10 days and occasionally 15 days or more. They are paid £353 a day and are reimbursed their expenses.
The panel hears evidence and makes findings of fact. If any allegations are proved, the Committee then decides whether the registrant is unfit to practise and what action they should take. The Committee can take a number of steps. The most serious is to take the dental professional’s name off the Register. This means they are ‘struck off’ and cannot practise. A dental professional has the right of appeal.
The appointments come as the first tranche of independently appointed panellists ended their 10 years of service on 31 July 2013.The new panellists are:
