CQC board completely replaced
The entire executive director team of the Care Quality Commission (CQC) is to be replaced by chief executive David Behan.  Additionally Health secretary Jeremy Hunt has said the CQC will be given additional funding to pay for its new inspection regime. “They will have as much money as they need to do this job properly,” he said.

A CQC spokesman said the remaining three executives who were in post when Mr Behan took over as chief executive last summer would no longer be part of the executive team.

The future executive team will be made up of Mr Behan, director of strategy Paul Bate, a director of corporate services who is currently being recruited, the new chief inspectors of hospitals and social care and Hilary Reynolds, who has recently been appointed as director of change.

The overhaul is part of wider changes to the regulator’s work which will see the introduction of specialist inspectors for health and social care and a more targeted, risk-based approach to inspections.

Health secretary Jeremy Hunt has said the Care Quality Commission will be given additional funding to pay for its new inspection regime. Giving evidence to the Commons’ health committee, Mr Hunt was asked whether the regulator would be given more money for changes to hospital inspection in the wake of the Francis report on the Mid Staffordshire care failings.

He said it would be given more, and that he was in discussion about how much. He said: “They will have as much money as they need to do this job properly.” A new chief inspector of hospitals will be appointed and will begin work before the end of the year, Mr Hunt added. He said he would not be more specific about when the new money would be announced.
