Challenging new era dawning Fallowfield warns
Dentistry in the UK is facing a challenging new era and practitioners should join the BDA to ensure they are prepared for it, said Martin Fallowfield, Chair of the BDA’s Principal Executive Committee, at its recent conference. He predicted that current economic problems and funding pressures will continue. It is also possible, he said, that dentistry will be faced with the possibility of further regulation.

Dr Fallowfield also said that for the first time unemployment of dentists could become a significant issue in a way that would have been unimaginable just ten years ago. The growth of dental corporates also changes the dental landscape, he said, explaining that the reach and influence of those bodies is growing and show no sign of abating.

But the BDA is also embarking on a new era and is ready to face up to the trials confronting the profession, he said. Challenges will not be shirked, and the BDA will not be afraid to speak up, he promised.

Dentists must stand together to face emerging challenges, he added, and reminded delegates of the importance of being part of their professional association. Together, the dental family is stronger, he said.
