Scottish LDC Conference votes for a Scottish GDC
The Scottish LDC Conference today passed a motion, at the third year of asking, for Scotland to have its' own Dental Council or registration body. The motion was proposed with gusto by Robert Sweeney, a member of the Conference's Agenda Committee. Stirling, 19th April 2013. The fait accompli of Direct Access was seen in Scotland to be even more contentious, and it was felt the written submission of the BDA and the voices of the profession had been drowned by the consumerist lobby.

The change to a GDC consisting of 12 appointed members, with only six dental professionals further dilutes the perceived future direction of the GDC, another step too far when viewed from north of the border.

For the second consecutive year, Professor Kevin O'Brien had spoken to the Conference and fielded many questions. However, the mood of the meeting had turned against the GDC and the way it has been perceived to be operating. Graham McKirdy also spoke for the motion, and stated that during the last twelve months, his views on the matter had been reversed. The Chair of GDC is appointed by the Westminster Government, and there is a doubt whether there will be any Scottish representation at all.

The view was that there should be a body to over see the profession that is answerable in Scotland.
