Northern Ireland minister is considering fluoridation
The Northern Ireland health minister Edwin Poots says he is considering fluoridation of the water supply to ensure fluoride is delivered to poorer people and dental disease is more often prevented. He said “The 2007 Oral Health Strategy stated that the greatest oral health gain is likely to be achieved through community water fluoridation."

Mr Poots continued:  “Water fluoridation ensures delivery of fluoride to ‘hard-to-reach’ groups such as those of lower socioeconomic status who are more likely to experience dental disease. I am giving consideration to fluoridation of the water supplies at present.”

Northern Ireland has the worst oral health in the UK and young people in the region have the worst rate of dental decay in western Europe. The Minister said the public should be ashamed of their dental hygiene.

"We've failed miserably," he said, before adding that children were being allowed far too much sugary food and drink from a very early age - in some cases before the age of one year. The consequences are that people have rotten teeth from a very early age. They are having them filled and refilled - and going through a lot of pain in the process."
