HIP~Z : An appeal for health, Zanzibar

HIP~Z : An appeal for health, Zanzibar
Dentist and GDPUK member, Ike Fazal, is appealing to all his dental colleagues, wherever you are, to donate in kind, any redundant dental items, which may be surplus to your needs,  items of equipment, hand instruments, or all kinds of consumables. ‘HIP~Z’: Health Improvement Project, ZANZIBAR, is a British charity, which is now in a joint venture agreement with the Ministry of Health, Zanzibar.

Ike Fazal writes: ‘Zanzibar ( “The Spice Island”) 40 Km off the coast of Tanzania, East Africa conjures up so many exotic images : white sandy beaches, warm turquoise seas, beautiful, old world Arab and Swahili architecture, a mystical, long forgotten place, unspoilt, because time really stood still.

‘It is all that … but there is another side to Zanzibar, one which brings a special kind of visitor ... Mr Ru MacDonagh, a Consultant Urologist from Taunton, Dr Jon Rees, my GMP / doctor at Nailsea, Bristol, amongst several other medical professionals, who have a strong, innate desire to help others less fortunate than ourselves.

‘These doctors have been instrumental with local teams in Zanzibar, in setting up HIP~Z Health Improvement Project, ZANZIBAR, a British Charity, which is now in a joint venture agreement with the Ministry of Health, Zanzibar.

‘The singer Peter Andre is also now involved with HIP~Z, helping to raise awareness of the lack of medical facilities and extremely low life expectancy on Zanzibar.

‘Over the past few years HIP~Z has grown, to encompass organisation and management of 2 hospitals, which offer essential very low cost treatments for upto 250,000 of the islanders, who would otherwise be unable to afford surgical, maternity or other even basic, primary health care. There is a lot still to do, a lot of medical items still to be procured, inclusive of spares,a nd a lot of challenges ahead, but lives are being saved, and made better, 1 at a time.

‘Retired Brighton based dentist Dr Feroz Jafferji, originally from Zanzibar, returned to the Island 3 years ago and linked up with old classmates to set up “OZ”, Outreach Zanzibar. http://outreachzanzibar.org OZ has now combined forces with “HIP~Z”, to try and organise at least 2 new fully functioning dental clinics, based in 2 separate hospital locations in Zanzibar, to offer so many people a chance to have simple restorative dentistry, who would otherwise have no access to any dentistry, except perhaps the most basic form of pain relief from locally trained therapists. This is a really ambitious plan, one which I have committed to assist and enable, as a UK based dentist with East African origins, and many fond childhood memories.

APPEAL FOR ANY REDUNDANT (BUT USEFUL) DENTAL ITEMS
‘May I appeal to all my dental colleagues, wherever you are, to donate in kind, any redundant dental items, which may be surplus to your needs, be it small or large items of equipment, hand instruments, or all kinds of consumables (in date or even slightly out of date are acceptable)
From my previous experience, we were overwhelmed with almost 600 parcels arriving from all over the UK, over 2 years.

‘We hope to better that this time, and we request most of you, who are generously donating whatever you feel has some use, to be kind enough to use your own recycled packaging & postage in sending items to this worthwhile cause.

‘We do have “a man & a van” available, so are able, within limits, to collect certain essential large equipment, by mutual agreement, if you feel your items have some useful life and could contribute to “HIP ZANZIBAR“ whose detailed wishlist is :
