Marathon GDC meeting makes important decisions

As well as making changes to its Fitness to practise procedures on which it has been criticised, The General Dental Council (GDC) made decisions that will affect all registrants:

  • The Annual Retention Fee will remain unchanged in 2013
  • Public consultation will take place this autumn on Direct Access and a new Standards and Ethics guidance
  • The GDC will start work on the possibility of introducing a pre-registration year.

The GDC accepted a budget for 2013 which is based on there being no increase in the Annual Retention Fee for any registrants. This is despite their being increases in the costs which have been met by efficiency savings and an ambitious programme of re-development of the Wimpole Street site.

This autumn there will be public consultations on proposals to allow Direct Access to dental care professionals, without the need to be seen first by a dentist, provided the work done is within their scope of practice. They will also consult on draft standards for conduct performance and ethics. The consultations will be open to individuals as well as organisations.

Finally they will explore the possibility of creating a pre-registration year before a new graduate can go on the Register. This would bring dentistry in line with the medical and other professions.
