The number of dental patients seen under the NHS continues to grow. 1.4 million more were seen in the two years to June 2012 compared with 2006. As a percentage of the adult and child populations the rise is more modest. Courses of treatment including a fluoride varnish continue to rise for both adults and children. The number of female dentists working showed an increase during the last year.

Between 2006/07 and 2011/12 there have been gradual increases in the average weekly hours of dentists, with practice owners increasing from 39.6 to 41.9 hours. Over the same time period, there was also a gradual increase in the proportion of time spent on non-clinical work (including administration). Despite the increase in hours, time spent on clinical work by dentists changed little between 2006/07 and 2011/12.

| The earnings figures for dentists in 2011/12 have been published. Average net earnings for all NHS dentists was £77,900, an 8.2 per cent decrease from £84,900 in 2009/10. The figures do include private earnings. A majority (59.8 per cent) earned a taxable income from NHS and private dentistry of less than £75,000 in 2010/11, compared to 55.8 per cent in 2009/10. |

| The latest NASDAL goodwill survey shows that dental practices are selling well and that large practices with NHS contracts are still sought after. According to accountant Alan Suggett the average goodwill as a percentage of turnover for all practices sold in the quarter ending 30th April was 91%, while the average for NHS practices was 105%. |

| Over 6,000 members of the dental team have already registered to attend this year’s BDTA Dental Showcase, with less than two months until the event takes place. This year the exhibition will take place at ExCeL London from the 4th-6th October. | A new survey, for the British Dental Health Foundation (BDHF), has looked into some of the nation's oral health habits. It has revealed that many do not take their oral health into consideration when eating and drinking. BDHF Chief Executive, Dr Nigel Carter, says a healthy eating mind-set should be top of everybody's shopping list if oral health in the UK is to improve. |

This review of whether supportive care is effective in preventing recurrence or progression of peri-implantitis included 15 studies. However none of the included studies was specifically designed to test supportive care regimens so there is a need for new well conducted and reported randomised trials of appropraite size and duration to provide better quality evidence.

This review of the level of toothbrush contamination and the factors affecting contamination in the general population included 15 studies. The findings show that toothbrush contamination occurs after first use and rises with continuing use. However, there is little evidence of significant adverse events from current practices.

This review of oil pulling compared to chlorhexidine and other mouthwashes in improving the plaque, gingival and bacteria count parameters included 25 RCTs. However, the studies are modest in size of short duration and all except one study were considered to be at high risk of bias. Consequently the available evidence is of very low certainty and should be interpreted cautiously.
