Mass tooth-brushing launches National Smile Month 2014

Children and families from Leicester brushed up on their oral health at a synchronised tooth-brushing event to launch National Smile Month 2014. Public health consultant Dr Jasmine Murphy said: “Throughout National Smile Month, we're holding a series of events aimed at encouraging people to think more about looking after their oral health as part of good overall health. This is very important for Leicester as many children suffer from poor dental health.”

Whistle-blower prompts investigation of GDC

Following concerns raised with the Professional Standards Authority (the GDC’s regulator) by a whistle-blower about the management and support processes of the General Dental Council’s Investigating Committee, it has decided to carry out an investigation. The report will be sent to the Health Select Committee and published it in due course.

Research underlines importance of mouthguards

A study in the May/June 2014 issue of General Dentistry, the journal of the US Academy of General Dentistry says that when buying a mouthguard, parents who want to reduce their child's risk of a sports-related concussion should visit a dentist instead of a sporting goods store.

Patient confidence in dental care and regulation is high

The General Dental Council has announced that a new survey of more than 1600 patients and members of the public has revealed that 96% of those who visit the dentist once a year are satisfied with the dental care or treatment that they receive. Overall satisfaction with dental care is high, though patients are less confident that poor treatment and care is dealt with effectively.
