Record numbers of GP practices are closing, following a rise in the number of doctors retiring early ahead of a tax clampdown on pension pots. More than 250,000 patients were ‘displaced’ by surgery closures in the last year. In total, the number of practices closing has risen five-fold since 2013. A new survey also says that nearly 40% of GPs in the South West of England say they are highly likely to quit the profession because of low morale and overwhelming workloads.
Giving evidence at the trial of dentist Phillip Gale on a charge of attempted murder at Preston Crown Court, his wife told the court that her husband was ‘not a violent man’. She said: “My husband is a professional person. We had a beautiful home. I blame myself.” Mark Stewart, defending, said Gale had knifed Andrew Smith in self defence after a scuffle spilled into the hallway.
The trial of dentist Phillip Gale on a charge of attempted murder has opened at Preston Crown Court. Jurors were told that he stabbed a love rival four times in his back and chest when he returned home to find the man with his wife. He flew into a rage stabbing Andrew Smith repeatedly in anger at the home he shared with his wife of 13 years in Foulridge, Lancashire. The trial continues.
The main reason for dental implant failure is peri-implantitis, which is caused when the biofilms develop on them. A research team from the University of Plymouth, have joined forces to develop and evaluate the effectiveness of a new nanocoating for dental implants to reduce the risk of peri-implantitis. The results of their work are published in the journal Nanotoxicology.

Teenage boys should be encouraged to get the HPV vaccination as well as girls, the Association of Teachers and Lecturers (ATL) annual conference heard. Public Health England is considering plans to extend the vaccination programme to boys, after international studies showed that by 2020 the number of men contracting cancer from the HPV infection will outstrip the number of women.
