The Faculty of General Dental Practice and British Dental Association have published an updated version of their Antimicrobial Prescribing Self-Audit Tool. Dr Nick Palmer, Editor and co-author of the Faculty’s prescribing guidance, said: “The government’s renewed focus on tackling AMR is very welcome, and dentists have a vital contribution to make in keeping antibiotics working.”

The Oral Health Foundation has announced that it has given direct support to 400,000 people through its Dental Helpline. For more than two decades, the Dental Helpline has provided invaluable support for those looking to seek advice, help and reassurance about their oral health and wellbeing. Many of the people who reach out to the charity’s free-advice service are anxious, confused and not sure where to turn.

Pregnant women with gum disease are significantly more likely to go into early labour, according to the findings of a new study. Research discovered that women who entered labour early were one and a half times more likely (45%) to have gum disease than women who experienced a perfect pregnancy (29%).

The BDA has called on the Government to recognise the workforce crisis in dentistry with Brexit looming, as new evidence from GDC suggests up to a third of the UK’s 6,300 European qualified dental registrants intend to leave UK dentistry. BDA’s Mick Armstrong said: “Government needs to wake up, and smell the coffee. NHS dentistry can’t be run without dentists.”

New law seeks to improve access to dental care in USA

The American Dental Association (ADA) has applauded USA Congress for passing the Action for Dental Health Act. For years, dentists have worked to improve access to oral health care for underserved Americans and have championed this patient-benefiting legislation. “This is a tremendous victory for dentistry and patients everywhere,” said Jeffrey M.
