COVID-19: Tuesday Update: Scotland, BDA Indemnity and CQC

The BDA reports on a new funding package for Scotland, costs reduction up to 80% on its indemnity package and news from the CQC that they are considering action against practices still offering routine care. They are seeking clarity on NHS payments to dentists, PPE, urgent care centres, redeployment, furlough and they we will continue to press the Government on the issue of financial support for the self-employed.

Mike Mulcahy awarded FGDP Medal

Professor Mike Mulcahy has been awarded the Faculty Medal, which recognises the most exceptional contributions to the general dental profession through the Faculty of General Dental Practice, and is the highest honour bestowed by the organisation. The award was made at Faculty annual dinner in London on March 12, (before social distancing).

COVID-19: Monday Update – Row erupts over Minister’s claim

At yesterday’s No 10 briefing, Minister Robert Jenrick claimed that ‘every single … dental surgery has had a PPE delivery’. This was robustly denied on Twitter by dentists, including BDA Chair Mick Armstrong: “We can do without Cabinet Ministers talking about non-existent deliveries of PPE. Weeks have been lost on setting up a properly equipped emergency dental service.”

Indemnifiers cut membership costs for dentists

Both Dental Protection and MDDUS have offered support to dentists affected by the Covid-19 virus and the ban on most dental work. Dental Protection has announced two months free membership. MDDUS is automatically reducing the subscription cost of indemnity cover for its dentist members by as much as 75%.

NHS/Private practice gap widens - NASDAL

The latest NASDAL (National Association of Specialist Dental Accountants and Lawyers) Benchmarking figures for 2018-19 have just been released and show the gap in profitability between NHS and Private practices has grown – a typical private practice’s profit over £16,000 greater than that of a typical NHS practice.

COVID-19: Weekend Update - Volunteers needed, PPE talks and Chancellor’s plans to help self-employed

The CDO (England) is calling for volunteers in the dental workforce to be redeployed to areas of need within the wider NHS, based on the competencies of each team member. The BDA has been engaged in talks on the provision of PPE and the Chancellor has announced a scheme to help the self-employed, but not for those earning over £50K a year.
