Freakshakes should be banned and BDA seeks a way forward

The campaign group Action on Sugar is demanding a ban on freakshakes and all milkshakes with more than 300 calories. It surveyed milkshakes sold in restaurants and fast food shops in the UK and found they contained "grotesque levels of sugar and calories", with one containing 39 teaspoons of sugar or 1,280 calories. BDA hosts a ’sugar summit’ to open new front on the war on sugar.

Government urged to protect dentists from rising costs of clinical negligence

Dental Protection is calling on the Government to introduce a package of legal reforms that would protect dentists from the spiralling cost of clinical negligence claims. Raj Rattan, Dental Director at Dental Protection said: “It is not unusual for the costs awarded to claimant lawyers to be significantly higher than the damages paid to the patient.”

NASDAL Goodwill Survey shows a divided nation

Last week saw the release of the latest practice goodwill statistics from the NASDAL (The National Association of Specialist Dental Accountants and Lawyers) survey released. Perhaps rather aptly for the current political climate, the survey for the quarter ending 31^st July 2018 shows a divided country with a huge disparity in practice goodwill values.

BDA calls on Scottish Government to tackle oral health inequalities

The BDA in Scotland is calling on the Scottish Government to make faster progress in tackling long-standing oral health inequalities, following a new report on children’s dental health. Robert Donald, Chair of the BDA’s Scottish Council said: “Dentists have applauded the progress secured through Childsmile, but this data is a stark reminder that the Scottish Government cannot rest on its laurels”.

Prevention better than cure says Matt Hancock

Introducing a new prevention strategy Matt Hancock, Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, said that there must be a greater focus and spending on prevention, not just cure, in the future. BDA chair, Mike Armstrong, commented: “Sadly he’s had more to say about broccoli than wholly preventable oral diseases that are costing our NHS millions.”

Queues for dentists’ appointments are back

Hundreds of people have queued for hours to register at a dental practice in Llangollen. The BDA has called on the Welsh Government and Local Health Boards in Wales to ensure this situation does not become the ‘new normal’- pressing for real reform of the failed NHS dental system.
