FDS says dentists could play greater role in detecting disease

Dentists could play a greater role in detecting health conditions such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease the Dean of the Faculty of Dental Surgery, Professor Michael Escudier, has said. He pointed out that while examining the patient’s mouth there was the opportunity to monitor the state of their general health. He spoke out as the FDS published its ‘Position Statement on oral health and general health’.

Denture wearing during sleep doubles the risk of pneumonia

New research, published in the Journal of Dental Research, shows denture wearing during sleep is associated not only with oral inflammatory and microbial burden but also with incident pneumonia, a potentially life-threatening condition in the very elderly. These results suggest that simple denture care habits could reduce the risk of pneumonia in the community.

Dental Protection speaks out over threat to pension rights

Dental Protection opposes a Government proposal that could deprive dentists of the NHS Pension Scheme prior to a criminal conviction. Raj Rattan, Dental Director at Dental Protection, said: “We are strongly opposed to the Department of Health and Social Care’s proposal, which goes against the basic principle of natural justice of being innocent until proven guilty.”

Danish dental politician to stand for the Brexit Party in coming Euro elections

GDPC Chair, Henrik Overgaard-Nielsen, (@brexithenrick) has announced that he is standing as the Brexit Party (@brexitparty_uk) candidate in the North West of England. As well as being the Chair of the General Dental Practice Committee, Henrik is a Danish national.

Cornwall Council to act over dental access problems

Cornwall Council has voted to take action to help tackle the shortage of NHS dentists in the county with more than 48,000 people on the waiting list. They have agreed to ask the health and adult social care overview and scrutiny committee to work with health partners to look at what could be done to solve the problem. The Council will also be contacting the Secretary of State for Health to highlight the issue and present potential solutions.

Misleading dental incomes figures in Scotland published

Over the weekend, articles in The Sunday Times and The Scotsman reported that ‘Scotland’s highest paid dentist grossed more than £1 million last year’ The data from NHS Scotland revealed that 18 individuals achieved income of more than £500,000 in 2017-18. The articles failed to point out that these gross earnings figures were for all the dentists in each practice(s) rather than individuals.
