GDC to visit Wales

The General Dental Council (GDC) will hold an event for dental professionals working in and around Cardiff on May 25 at St David’s Hotel, starting at 6pm. Anyone interested in coming along is being urged to reserve their spot by booking online at www.gdc-uk.org Those attending can claim two hours of verifiable CPD for taking part in one of two workshops on offer.

Come back PCTs – all is forgiven

The Health Select Committee, chaired by former health secretary, Stephen Dorrell, has reported on commissioning in the light of the Health Bill, which has been put on hold by the Government. The committee recommends that the GP consortia should commission both primary and secondary care, including dentistry. They should however be enlarged to include other health professionals and be more accountable to the public. If this is accepted they will look very much like PCTs do now.

DH suddenly delay pilots until summer

The new contract pilots, due to start on April 1 have been delayed until at least June/July. In a letter to participants David Lye from Dental Services at the Department of Health says that software will not be up and running until late May/June and it will then be necessary for PCTs to agree contract variations with their dentists.

Dentistry gets clean bill of health

The full results of the Adult Dental Health Survey (2009) have been announced. Across almost all of the indicators of oral health and disease there has been a continued improvement in adults’ dental health. The large majority of adults also indicate that they are attending the dentist at least once every two years.

CDO updates guidance on recall intervals

Chief Dental Officer for England, Barry Cockcroft, has issued a letter on recall interval guidance. He says that since the publication of the NICE guidelines in 2004, a great deal of work has been done by the NHS on how to put the guidelines into practice effectively, and it is important that this is shared more widely with colleagues.

Overseas dentists caught up in bureaucratic dispute

Dentists from India and other non-EU countries have been caught in bureaucratic wrangles between professional governing bodies in Britain, a campaign group have claimed. Candidates who complete the first part of LDS held by the Royal College of Surgeons of England are not being allowed to complete the second part due to wrangles between the Royal College and the General Dental Council (GDC).
