FGDP announces end of new ortho course

The new Diploma in Primary Care Orthodontics has seen its first cohort of students receive their diplomas at the Royal College of Surgeons of England. The ceremony held on the 1st April was the culmination of three years of study for the group of 25 students. The Diploma was developed by the Faculty of General Dental Practice (UK) and the British Orthodontic Society, and is examined jointly with the Faculty of Dental Surgery.

NHS contract values up only 0.5% this year

Health Secretary, Andrew Lansley, has decided to increase NHS contract values by only 0.5% this year. In a letter the CDO, Barry Cockcroft, says that it had already been announced that the pay element would be frozen for this year and next. In addition the expenses part would be subject to a 4% improvement in ‘efficiency and productivity’. The BDA has said that the ‘uplift’ is really a pay cut.

Male and female dentists practise differently

Female dentists in the USA differ from their male counterparts in some aspects of the prevention, assessment and treatment of dental caries, even with significant covariates taken into account. The practice patterns of female dentists suggest a treatment philosophy with a greater focus on caries prevention.

Ellis Paul awarded FGDP Fellowship

Ellis Paul, well known to many on GDPUK, has been awarded Fellowship from the Faculty of General Dental Practice (UK). Dean Russ Ladwa told Ellis: ‘It is obvious for all to see that you have exceptional enthusiasm for your profession, and a willingness to help others along their chosen path. Heavier penalties for late tax returns

Penalties for late submission of  tax returns have just got more stringent, according to Bob Cummings, tax specialist to the National Association of Specialist Dental Accountants (NASDA). He explained that HM Revenue and Customs have changed the penalty system for late submission.  Quite simply, the later your tax return is submitted, the more you will be penalised.

Treatment for a royal smile?

Kate Middleton is said to have been receiving treatment from Harley Street dentist Dr Didier Fillion even before her engagement. Dr Tif Qureshi, from the British Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, says it looks as though Kate has been secretly having orthodontic treatment. “It looks as though she’s had some whitening treatment and tooth edge augmention to make her teeth all the correct length,” he said.

Cardiff researcher wins international award

Breakthroughs in the regeneration of bone and dental tissue have won a Cardiff University researcher a leading award for young dental scientists. Dr Alastair Sloan received the International Association for Dental Research’s Young Investigator Award at the annual general session in San Diego, USA. He received a plaque and US$3,500.

Scotland rules on autoclaves

The Scottish Health Technologies Group has determined that there is lack of evidence to conclude that requiring the provision of vacuum sterilisers in primary care dental practices in Scotland would increase patient safety and thereby justify the cost. This advice statement means non-vacuum phase autoclaves can continue to be used in primary care dental settings in Scotland.
