Speaking at the dinner the night before the LDC Conference, chairman Richard Elvin asked why there had to be so much change in the NHS. He recalled many hours spent in committees, only for the decisions to be over-ridden. ' NHS dentistry should be taken out of politics’, he said.

At the Conference of LDCs, held last Friday in London, Tony Jacobs, the owner of GDPUK, has been installed as chair of the Conference of LDCs for 2013/14.Jonathan Randall (Herts LDC) was elected to the postion of Chair for 2014/15. Stuart Allan was elected to the Agenda Committee, and Jim Lafferty to GDPC. Tim Harker was re-elected as Treasurer.

The General Dental Council’s (GDC) consultation on Continuing Professional Development (CPD) has highlighted some concerns about the quality of certain CPD on offer to dental professionals. The GDC is responding to concerns about CPD quality by calling on providers and the whole dental CPD industry to robustly quality assure their products and services and to develop industry-led standards.

The 2013 Conference of Local Dental Committees (LDCs) takes place in London this Friday under the chairmanship of Richard Elvin (Herts). Health Minister Earl Howe is due to make an address and answer questions from the floor. During the day delegates will have the chance to debate 26 motions, some contentious, from LDCs.

A new economic analysis in the USA of practising dental therapists shows an increase in access to routine preventative care for children and low-income adults. At the same time, they are providing that care at a reduced cost to the dental practice. The report by Community Catalyst, said that therapists in Alaska and Minnesota cost their employers 27 and 29 percent respectively of the revenue they generate.

Dr David Geddes head of primary care commissioning, NHS England, has written to regional and area directors of commissioning to clarify how the role of local representative committees will be formally recognised in the new NHS.It will assume statutory responsibility to recognise the local representative committees, which are composed of elected members representing the four main primary care professions.

The General Dental Council (GDC) has announced that William (Bill) Moyes has been appointed as its Chair from October 1, 2013. Mr Moyes currently holds non-executive directorships with the Office of Fair Trading, the Priory Hospital Group, and the Legal Services Board. He was previously Executive Chairman of Monitor, the independent regulator of NHS Foundation Trusts from 2004-2010.

A petrol bomb was hurled through a Gateshead dentist's window causing £90,000 of damage to the surgery. The dentist is offering a £3,000 reward after the surgery was set on fire twice in one week. As police continue to hunt the culprits, practice coordinator, Sue Mulholland, has told of her disbelief that someone would want to do so much harm to the clinic.
