Smiles Dental is investing £6 million and opening 10 new dental practices in the North of England, creating more than 150 jobs over the next 18 months. CEO Emmet O’Neill said: 'I am excited to be expanding the business at this time and creating new jobs is very satisfying. Dental Showcase is re-launching the charity poll for 2013. Dentaid, British Dental Health Foundation (BDHF) and Bridge2Aid have again been chosen to receive up to £10,000. When on-line registrations reach 20,000, the BDTA will donate £5,000, shared out between the charities in accordance with your votes. When registrations reach 25,000 BDTA will add another £5,000.

The General Dental Council (GDC) and Groupon, the ‘daily deals’ company, are working together to guard against promotion of illegal tooth whitening. As the leading UK provider of ‘daily deals’, Groupon has already taken action not to offer tooth whitening deals from individuals who are not regulated by the GDC.

The sales market of NHS dental practices in England has been thrown into chaos following the changes to the administration of primary dental care services, according to NASDAL lawyers who continue to finalise difficult deals against the odds. Louise Fegan of NASDAL law firm Morrisons Solicitors explained that in addition to the change in administration, further layers of bureaucracy had been added into the sales process.

With its first anniversary celebrated in March this year, Heart Your Smile launched a number of new initiatives – the first of which is Innovation 360°. To qualify for an Innovation 360° Grant, simply complete an on-line application by 30th June 2013.

A Government commitment to improve the oral health of the youngest children could be jeopardised if the shortfall in the dental public health workforce is not addressed, the British Dental Association (BDA) has warned. Dr Christopher Allen, the Chair of the BDA’s Dental Public Health Committee, said: “There is a longstanding shortage of Consultants in Dental Public Health. Pre-April, approximately one-third of primary care trusts did not have access to CDPH advice.”

Dental treatment costs more in Glasgow than anywhere else in Scotland – around £57 for adults and £73 for children. NHS Ayrshire and Arran spent the second highest amount per patient, £52 for adults and £71 for children. Orkney was the cheapest for adults at £23, while in the Western Isles the cost for children was the lowest at £32.

Professor Sir Bruce Keogh has reviewed regulation in the cosmetic interventions sector following the PIP implant scandal. His group were surprised to discover that non-surgical interventions are almost entirely unregulated. It is their view that dermal fillers are a crisis waiting to happen and they have made recommendations to address this.
