Only four dentists will sit on the new GDC in the autumn. One professional member (from Wales) is yet to be appointed. Technician David Smith has been reappointed, all others are new to the GDC. Five lay members have also been appointed to join the first appointed chair, Bill Moyes. There were nearly 300 applicants for the 12 places.

| Solicitor Alex Hall has informed clients that NHS England has announced that ‘no breach notices will be issued for under-delivery’ in 2013/14 only. Although the new policy states that they will ‘financially recover all monies to 100% where a contractor has delivered less than 96% of the contractual UDAs’. The General Dental Council (GDC) has published its new 'Standards for the Dental Team' which will replace its current Standards Guidance. The new 'Standards for the Dental Team' was approved by Council in June and is now available to view on the GDC website

A recent report shows that there are worrying levels of perceived bullying at all levels in the culture of the CQC. Over 90% of the 236 people who contributed to the report felt that they had been subjected to bullying or harassment in the workplace. It was clear to the report’s authors that the problem exists across the whole organisation.

Public health minister, Anna Soubry, is reported as saying, in an interview with The Grocer, that ‘there's nothing wrong with sweets’. She said that it was not the job of government to tell supermarkets where to put their shelves. She was commenting on a proposal to ban stores from arranging sweets and chocolate in front of checkouts.

Dental professionals across the UK are being urged to get involved in a new British Dental Association (BDA) campaign to reduce the harm done to children’s oral health by taking sugary and acidic food and drink outside regular mealtimes. The ‘Make a meal of it’ campaign proposes restrictions on the availability and advertising of such products. The BDA is also supporting a specific tax on sugary, carbonated drinks.

Proposed changes to powers for law enforcement agencies to combat the use of ‘cutting agents’ in recreational drugs must not be allowed to adversely affect the availability of dental anaesthetics, the British Dental Association (BDA) is warning. The BDA is concerned that one of the substances covered by the proposals, the local anaesthetic lidocaine which is widely used in dentistry, should not have its legitimate supply interrupted.
