Jamie Reed MP a labour health spokesman asked the health secretary what steps he was taking ‘to ensure that those needing NHS dentistry do not resort to home remedies’. Health minister, Dr Poulter, replied that there was no need for anyone to resort to these kits as access to NHS dental services was adequate.

Of the 1153 eligible candidates who attended assessments for Dental Foundation Training, 76 remain without the offer of a place. The best estimate is that around 60 of these are from England and Wales dental schools.  968 places were offered initially and a further 85 have been offered since July 1.

The General Dental Council (GDC) has updated its standards guidance and renamed it Standards for the Dental Team, to take account of Direct Access and the new role of Dental Care Professionals. It has also taken account of the Francis Report and places an obligation on those who lead a team to promote a culture where whistleblowing is allowed.

GDC raises concerns over CPD for DCPs
In her report to the General Dental Council (GDC) the CEO, Evlynne Gilvarry raised concerns about those Dental Care Professionals (DCPs) who may not have complied with the requirements of the first five year cycle of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) when it ends in July. She said she was also conscious of the implications of a significant reduction in the DCP workforce, as well as reduction in GDC income if significant numbers are removed from the register.

In the NHS, the longer term implications of the new contract worry many. Private dentists are looking happier with 67 per cent expecting a significant increase in demand in the next five years

This annual event raised over £2300 this year which will be used to sponsor a DentaidBox; a portable dental surgery in a wheelie bin that will enable oral health workers to provide vital, pain relieving dental care to many people in disadvantaged communities.

The Westminster Health Forum seminar debated whether the days of NHS contracts which were not time limited were numbered. Tony Donaldson, of the Office of Fair Trading said that dentists should not expect ‘indefinite’ contracts. But Martin Fallowfield chair of the BDA PEC vigorously opposed short term contracts, pointing out that it was dentists, not Government, that put capital into practices.
