GDC develops interactive site for its Standards

To support the implementation of the new ‘Standards for the Dental Team’, the General Dental Council (GDC) has developed an interactive site with case studies, scenarios and FAQs. 'Focus on Standards' has been designed to help registrants test their knowledge on ‘Standards for the Dental Team’. Learning materials for each of the nine principles are included.

Lancaster ‘whitener’ prosecuted

On 20 December 2013 Hayley Wilding, who didn’t attend Lancaster Magistrates’ Court was found guilty of unlawfully practising dentistry at Vanity Salon on Ulswater Road in Ridge in Lancaster. She was fined a total of £1,350, ordered to pay a £135 victim surcharge and full costs to the GDC of £1862.64. This is the second successful prosecution launched by the GDC since May 2013.

The 3rd edition Selection Criteria For Dental Radiography brings the FGDP(UK)’s authoritative guidance up to date. Lead Editor Professor Keith Horner said: “Patient and practitioner safety as well as livelihoods are dependent upon following recognised standards. The FGDP(UK) takes its standards setting role very seriously. Dental professionals can’t afford not to keep up to date with these changes.”

Academics at Newcastle University have called for tooth loss to be taken more seriously, after new research revealed the full imact it can have on patients' lives. The study, published in the journal Sociology of Health and Illness, found that participants were devastated by their tooth loss which some compared to losing an arm or leg.

An audit by the Professional Standards Authority has found that the decisions made by the General Dental Council (GDC) at the initial stages of its Fitness to Practise (FTP) process afford protection to the public. However the report also highlights key areas for further improvement. These relate to record-keeping, timeliness and customer service.

Tony Kilcoyne’s ‘Big Lie’ letter has been published in the Daily Telegraph, together with an article in its News section, headlined: 'NHS provision on the brink of crisis, ministers are told'. In a response Barry Cockcroft CDO NHS England is quoted as saying that "there is no credible evidence to support the suggestion that there is a 'growing disaster' in NHS dentistry."

Dentist jailed for NHS fraud

Dentist jailed for NHS fraud

Dental surgeon Jochemus Venter has been jailed for 18 months at Cardiff Crown Court for submitting fraudulent claims to NHS Dental Services for the provision of dental treatments totalling £47,947. The false claims were made from April 2006 to July 2010, while working at a dental practice in Llandrindod Wells, Wales. He pleaded guilty previously to eight charges of false accounting.
