In a session held at the British Dental Association conference in Manchester three of the authors of the 2009 Steele Review of NHS Dentistry examined the progress of contract reform over the past six years. Professor Steele said: “The development of viable prototypes is now a very important step. It is fair to say that the type B prototypes, where disease prevention and management are grouped together under capitation, are probably closest to the approach that we had envisaged.”

The British Dental Association’s (BDA) Mick Armstrong has issued a rallying cry to dentists to throw off the image of “the quiet profession” and rise to the challenge in the next parliament. The Chair of the Principal Executive Committee used his address to BDA Conference in Manchester to outline key strategic priorities for the BDA, including a focus on dental regulation, contracts and workforce morale.

Dental practice-owners may need to draw on their powers of compromise in order to comply with the new rules on Shared Parental Leave (‘SPL’), says NASDAL. This allows parents to share up to 50 weeks’ leave in their child’s first year. The new rules apply to parents whose child is due to be born on or after 5 April 2015, allowing parents to share up to 50 weeks’ leave between them in a single continuous period or discontinuous, returning to work between periods of leave, before their child’s first birthday.

In an interview with Fiona Sandom, president of the British Association of Dental Therapists (BADT), the former CDO, Barry Cockcroft said that many dentists tend to overestimate the public’s concern about receiving their oral health care from other members of the dental team. He also said that any reluctance by patients to receive treatment from a dental hygienist or dental therapist instead of a dentist would be ‘unusual’.

The newly-constituted Young Dentists Committee met for the first time on 10 April and elected a new chair, Harman Chahal, and two vice-chairs, Ursala Jogezai and Sami Stagnell. Kevin Opoku-Dapaah completes the YDC Executive. Chair Harman Chahal said: “I'm honoured to be the first elected chair for the YDC and I really look forward to working with committee on some of the big issues affecting young dentists.”

The British Dental Industry Association (BDIA) has announced the launch of a completely re-designed version of its website, www.bdia.org.uk Its features include a new look, better user experience with enhanced content, navigation and new functionality. All this together with greater optimisation for mobile devices will allow both BDIA members and the wider dental profession to interact more easily with the Association online.

Speaking at the Dentistry exhibition Kevin Lewis, dental director of Dental Protection explained how the UK dental profession lost the plot, where we left it and how we might find it again. He said: “The tsunami of complaints, litigation and regulatory (GDC) challenge faced by UK dentists in recent years is suggestive of misplaced and unrealistic expectations coupled with an unnecessarily hostile professional environment. Contrary to the views expressed in some quarters, it does not provide evidence of falling standards in UK dentistry.”
