Trick-or-treating will become a ‘Halloween horror’ for children unless parents take steps to protect their teeth, the Royal College of Surgeons (RCS) has warned. Across in the USA, however, dentists are taking part in the ‘Halloween Candy Buyback’ where dentists buy back sweets and donate them to their armed forces.

Baroness Benjamin asked the Government what plans they had ‘to promote oral health for children’. The minister, Lord Prior, replied that the childhood obesity plan had introduced two important measures for oral health: a soft drinks industry levy and a sugar reduction programme. Also Public Health England “continues to lead a wide-ranging programme to improve children’s oral health.”

Brushing teeth thoroughly to remove plaque may help prevent heart attacks and strokes by reducing inflammation in the body to levels close to those that can be achieved by statins, a new study suggests. Scientists in the US conducted a trial to see if a special toothpaste, which highlighted plaque on the teeth could improve cardiac health.
