As trailed by Guy Tuggle, the Parliamentary Health and Social Care Committee has now reconvened for a second round of oral evidence. This has come from a panel of guests selected to inform it about why MPs receive so many missives from angry patients unable to access NHS dentistry, and why so many dentists are walking away from NHS contracts.

One of the more surprising and shocking revelations to emerge at the first hearing of oral evidence by the Health & Social Care Committee inquiry into NHS dentistry was that nobody seems to know how much time NHS dentists work for the NHS.

It is barely a fortnight since the bombshell announcement that 85 of the BUPA Dental Care practices were to be either closed or, if buyers could be found for some of them, sold on. But they have not been the only corporate having to face the challenges of keeping practices with NHS contracts both staffed and viable.

The Dental Defence Union (DDU) has appointed a solicitor specialising in regulatory and criminal legal proceedings as its new head of legal services. Nick Tennant has been promoted to the role after 15 years working as a solicitor in the defence organisation’s in-house legal team. He will oversee the work of an expert team of 24 solicitors, three paralegals and support staff.
