GDC sends reminder about lab work

A year after changes laboratory work were introduced the General Dental Council wants to remind dentists and technicians about their responsibilities. Patients who are provided with a dental appliance must be offered a copy of the statement of manufacture. A record should be kept of whether or not the patient chooses to accept it. If the patient doesn’t accept a copy, the dentist must keep the statement for the lifetime of the appliance.

New bacterium involved in childhood caries discovered

Researchers at the Forsyth Institute in the USA have made a significant discovery about the nature of childhood dental disease. The studies identified a new pathogen connected to severe early childhood caries. The bacterium was present in the mouths of children with severe early childhood caries when other known pathogens such as Streptococcus mutans were not detected.

First successful prosecution for tooth whitening

In the first case of its kind, the General Dental Council (GDC), has successfully prosecuted a non-dentist for performing tooth whitening.. In London 48 year old Paul Hill pleaded guilty practising dentistry. He has been ordered to pay a total of £6,265 in fines and his company has been ordered to pay a total of £6,765. The amounts include costs of £5,500 for the GDC.

NASDA sees some good news for dentists in budget

George OsborneÃƒÆ’Ã†â€™Ãƒâ€šÃ‚Â¢ÃƒÆ’Ã‚Â¢ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â€šÂ¬Ã…Â¡Ãƒâ€šÃ‚Â¬ÃƒÆ’Ã‚Â¢ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â€šÂ¬Ã…Â¾Ãƒâ€šÃ‚Â¢s Budget brought a modest amount of good news for dentists, according to the National Association of Specialist Dental Accountants (NASDA). Mr Osborne confirmed that he regards the 50 per cent personal tax rate as a temporary measure and a few high earning dentists who have incorporated are likely to welcome the reduction in tax payable on profits.

CQC seeks to reassure dentists

The Care Quality Commission has sought to reassure dentists that have submitted a valid application to them, but not yet received a decision, will be considered as ‘in process’. This means that they can continue to operate without the threat of prosecution by the CQC. They will only take action against a provider during this transitional phase if they think the public is at risk.

Campaign launched to prevent unnecessary extractions

Julian Webber and other leading dental professionals have launched the Saving Teeth Awareness Campaign - www.savingteeth.co.uk - to provide information to patients who have a tooth infection that could result in tooth loss. The campaign was prompted by the widespread lack of awareness amongst patients that many teeth can be saved by root canal therapy.
