Three people were arrested in Florida after police raided a pawnshop suspected of selling stolen dental products. Investigators said the value of the stolen items could be more than $3 million. Electric toothbrushes and whitening trips were the favourites of the looters.

Practice Plan acquires Isoplan and Medenta

Practice Plan who provide practice-branded dental membership plans has announced the acquisition of two businesses; Isoplan, a plan provider with a presence across the UK and in particular Scotland, and Medenta, who arrange dental patient finance.

Gross, expenses, net earnings all down

The NHS Information Centre has issued earnings statistics for 2009/10, covering England and Wales. For all self-employed primary care dentists in 2009/10 (compared with 2008/09):
  • average taxable income was £84,900, a 5.2 per cent decrease from £89,600
  • average gross earnings were £184,900, a 5.0 per cent decrease from £194,700
  • average expenses were £100,000, a 4.8 per cent decrease from £105,100

Yorkshire dentist censured for poor hygiene

A South Yorkshire dentist whose practice was shut down for ignoring hygiene rules has had ‘stringent conditions’ placed on him by the GDC. Mohammed Siddiqui, of Rotherham, was told that he will only be able to practise within the NHS and is subject to 21 stringent conditions for three years. He admitted 23 charges of poor dental practice at a conduct committee hearing.

Alison Lockyer’s resignation to be investigated

The Council for Healthcare Regulatory Excellence (CHRE), the regulator’s regulator is to investigate the General Dental Council (GDC). The Department of Health has written to CHRE and asked it to advise whether the GDC may be failing in any way to fulfil its statutory functions. The Department’s request follows concerns raised by the former chair, Alison Lockyer, on her resignation from the GDC.

US man without insurance dies from dental infection

An unemployed Cincinnati man, Kyle Willis, 24, with no health insurance has died after a tooth infection spread to his brain. The man came down with toothache and was told he needed to have one of his wisdom teeth removed. But Willis decided to tough it out because he was out of work and couldn't afford the treatment.
