BDA welcomes amalgam agreement
The British Dental Association (BDA) has welcomed the approach of a United Nations treaty that aims to reduce mercury pollution. Dr Stuart Johnston said: “We are pleased to see that this treaty has taken a pragmatic view, acknowledging that the phase-down approach advocated by the World Health Organization is a sensible way to make progress.”

Denplan has donated £26,888.55 to MacMillan Cancer Support, raised by staff and member dentists throughout 2012. Denplan MD, Steve Gates handed the cheque to Lisa Murphy, MacMillan Cancer Support’s Fundraising Manager for South East Hampshire and the Isle of Wight at Denplan’s office in Winchester.

Child receives £9000 settlement for multiple extractions
A five-year-old boy who had to have 13 deciduous teeth extracted after suffering severe toothache has accepted a £9,000 settlement from his dentist. Cameron Jackson had to have the decayed teeth removed when he was just three. His mother took legal action against his dentist, who failed to spot the decay after Cameron's toothache became increasingly painful.

Ministers to issue guidance on water fluoridation
Minister Anna Soubry has confirmed that the Department of Health intends to issue guidance to regulations in February on water fluoridation including proposals to terminate a scheme in time for them to come into force on 1 April 2013 when responsibility for consultations on fluoridation proposals transfers to local authorities.

New pensions guidance for training practices published
The pension entitlements of training practices in England and Wales have finally been harmonized and clarified. David Paul, a Chartered Accountant and NASDAL member led the campaign to improve the pension guidance, working closely with NHSBSA to develop a document which is clear to both dentists and health authorities.

Practice sale values fall

Practice sale values fall
The sale value of the average dental practice has dropped to 92% of turnover in the most recent quarter ending October 2012from 101% in the previous quarter according to Alan Suggett of NASDAL. The figure for the average valuation has also dropped, albeit more modestly, from 99% in the previous quarter to  97%  in the most recent quarter.
