Only 12% of older Americans have some form of dental insurance and fewer than half visited a dentist in the previous year, suggests new Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health research on Medicare beneficiaries. The findings, published in the December issue of the journal Health Affairs, suggest an enormous unmet need for dental insurance among those 65 and older in the United States.

The BDA has announced it is planning to mount a legal challenge on behalf of NHS GDPs over NHS England’s approach to deductions from patient charge revenue. BDA Vice Chair Eddie Crouch said: “NHS England’s heavy handed approach to patient charge revenue means many dentists suffer financial losses simply for providing their patients with needed care. So we have taken legal advice about the legitimacy of their approach, and our lawyers say there is a strong case to be made.

The British Dental Association (BDA) has reacted strongly to new figures showing a morale crisis which threatens the future of NHS dentistry. The BDA’s Chair of the General Dental Practice Committee, Henrik Overgaard-Nielsen, said: “A wholly avoidable crisis of morale has left half of all NHS dentists looking for the exit, and puts the future of the service in jeopardy.”
The British Dental Association (BDA) has called for movement on stalled reforms to NHS dentistry in Wales, following a visit to a Swansea practice. BDA Wales invited the Conservative health spokesperson Angela Burns AM to visit. She has joined BDA Wales in calling for these promising pilots to be rapidly expanded in communities across Wales, ahead of a potential national roll-out.

The Government has set out its response to the consultation on the ‘sugar tax.’ But a statement by Jane Ellison, financial secretary to the Treasury, said it was a levy that ‘we would rather not collect’. They would prefer to see firms reformulating their products to reduce the sugar content.
