A tiny device that “snap fits” to your back teeth could revolutionise hands-free communication by enabling wearers to speak and hear radioed messages without any visible headset or microphone. The Molar Mic clips to the wearer’s upper molars and incorporates a waterproof microphone and a bone-conduction speaker to transmit incoming sound through the teeth and skull to the inner ear.

The National Association of Specialist Dental Accountants and Lawyers (NASDAL) has sought to reassure dental associates over the self-employed status. They say that there has been an outbreak of discussion again in recent weeks in regard to the employment status of dental associates, but there has been no change in the tax authorities’ policy on this subject.

By 2050 there are expected to be two billion people across the world aged 60 or older, more than double today’s figure, but there is no consistency of advice on denture care. The Oral Health Foundation has therefore developed guidelines to give patients, oral healthcare professionals and caregivers guidance on optimal denture care. These are supported by best evidence and based on consensus from key international experts.

HMRC have plans to introduce a points-based penalty system for late payments by businesses and individuals for corporation tax, income tax and self-assessment. As with the existing penalty regime, there will be a ‘reasonable excuse’ get-out, but like the current system, inability to pay and reliance on a third party are not reasonable excuses.

Delegates at BSPD’s annual conference in Dundee last week were presented with the long-awaited results of the FiCTION trial which was set up to test three different approaches to the management of tooth decay (dental caries) in children. It showed that prevention and empathetic dentistry is critical in management of dental caries in children.

Children will be banned from buying energy drinks under government plans to tackle childhood obesity and bad behaviour in schools. Shops that flout the ban will face fines of up to £2,500. But the Government expects that 90% of the energy drinks that children currently buy will be replaced after the ban by other soft drinks.
