Dentists in Ireland are leaving the Government-funded scheme ‘in their droves’

The Independent.ie reports that dentists are leaving an Irish Government-funded scheme ‘in their droves’ as they struggle to cope in the midst of the pandemic. New figures show that more than 260 dentists have dropped out of the scheme, that provides dental services to medical card holders, since the start of this year. About 200,000 people are now facing delays for treatment.

UK mouth cancer cases reach record high - Action Month starts

New cases of oral cancer in the UK have risen to a record high, according to the findings of a new report. Figures collected by the Oral Health Foundation show that 8,722 people in the UK were diagnosed with the disease last year, increasing by 97% since 2000. Such cases in the UK have soared for the 11^th year in a row and have more than doubled within the last generation.

COVID-19: CDO (England) update on dentistry in new lockdown

CDO (England) has confirmed that the advice given by GDPUK on dentistry following the Prime Minister’s announcement of further restrictions was correct. Sara Hurley confirmed that ‘practices should remain open to treat patients in line with the standard operating procedure and with regard to the recently updated national infection prevention control dental appendix.’

COVID-19: Update: Dental practices should remain open during new English lockdown

The Prime Minister has announced that, from midnight Thursday November 5, England will go into a nationwide lockdown until Wednesday December 2. Guidance has been issued from Gov.uk, which indicates that people will be allowed and encouraged to leave home for medical appointments and dental practices are not on the list of businesses that must close.

Chancellor increases packages for businesses and workers, but offers no support for self-employed dentists

The chancellor has unveiled further support plans for jobs and workers hit by COVID-19 restrictions, through changes to the Self-Employment Income Support Scheme (SEISS) and Job Support Scheme (JSS). But, the BDA says, it means colleagues with low to no NHS earnings ‘could be left dangerously exposed as we head into winter.’ The Chancellor has also confirmed that the temporary waiver of VAT on personal protective equipment would not be extended beyond the end of October.

Covid-19: Half of UK dentists feel pessimistic about the future

Nearly half (45%) of UK dentists feel their mental wellbeing is worse compared to the start of the pandemic, and 48% say they feel pessimistic about the future, according to a Dental Protection survey. 58% cited loss of income/financial worries, and half of the respondents (50%) said adapting to new policies and guidance – including restrictions on appointments - was having the most impact on their mental wellbeing.
