BDA protests about lack of DFT places

Dental Foundation Training (DFT) places must be found for the 107 UK final-year students and graduates who have applied for, but not yet been allocated, positions this year, the British Dental Association (BDA) is warning. The BDA’s Chair of Ethics, Education and the Dental Team, Judith Husband, has written to the Department of Health reiterating both the loss to the public purse and tragic personal consequences for aspiring young practitioners if places are not found.

BDA warns that dental students face debts up to £60,000

Dental students who started their degree in 2013-14 face the prospect of staggering levels of debt, in the region of £60,000, a new study suggests. The research carried out by the British Dental Association (BDA) also found that students who sat their final-year exams in 2012-13 had an average debt of £24,734 at the end of their studies.

Another tooth whitener prosecuted

On 5 February 2014 Michael Flanagan plead guilty at Nottingham Magistrates’ Court to unlawfully practising dentistry at Power Whitening in Nottingham on 10 January 2012. Mr Flanagan was given a conditional discharge, ordered to pay £355 in compensation and a £15 victim surcharge. He was also ordered to pay costs to the GDC of £1000. FGDP(UK) opens its doors to more

From 1^st January 2014 anyone possessing a postgraduate diploma in a dental subject from a UK higher education institution is eligible for full membership of the FGDP(UK). The Dean, Trevor Ferguson said this about the change: “By recognising qualifications from other UK higher education institutions, we are opening the doors to many people who may have previously been excluded from full membership.”

Missing dentist found by newspaper

A struck-off Scottish dentist, who went missing, has been tracked down by the Sunday Mail after being accused of charging taxpayers £800,000 for unnecessary treatment Stuart Craig, 53, who ran his own practice in Auchinleck, was found guilty by the General Dental Council of serious breaches of conduct between 1986 and 2011.

Martin Fallowfield removed as Chair of BDA PEC

The BDA has announced that, following the EGM on 21st February 2014, PEC members voted to remove Martin Fallowfield from the Chair. A new Chair will be elected by, and come from amongst, the PEC at an election is expected to take place in March, when the Committee meets next. Until a new Chair has been elected, the BDA will be led by the current Deputy Chair of the PEC, Dr Robert Kinloch, a general dental practitioner in Scotland.

Speculation continues as to who will emerge as the new Chair.
