Latest estimates published by healthcare experts LaingBuisson in the fourth edition of Dentistry UK Market Report, value UK primary care dentistry at £5.8bn in 2013/2014, with £3.62bn (63%) of this spent by government and patients on NHS dentistry, and £2.2bn generated from private dentistry (37%). In real terms dentistry spend is now 13% lower than its peak in 2009/2010.

Speaking at the BDA Conference in Manchester, health minister, Earl Howe outlined a future programme for development of the GDS contract. Change would be evolutionary not revolutionary, he said, “We need to get it right. New "prototype" contracts will be introduced in 2015 following a consultation this summer, in which all dentists are urged to participate.
Oasis Healthcare has struck a deal that will bring Smiles Dental into its portfolio for an undisclosed sum. CEO Justin Ash says it will enter ‘the attractive dental market in the Republic of Ireland’. Oasis’s turnover will increase from £160 million to over £210 million, providing dental care to over 2.5 million patients, as their practice network grows by 37% from 204 to 281.
Dr Alasdair Miller, a leading figure in dental education and former postgraduate dean for the South West of England, was installed as the President of the British Dental Association (BDA) at its annual conference in Manchester. He became the BDA’s 128th President, succeeding Northern Ireland’s Barry McGonigle.
BDIA Dental Showcase is launching a new look and feel for 2014. Reports from members who attended the British Dental Association’s AGM in Manchester say that no questions were asked from the chief executive Peter Ward who reported on the finances of the Association as well as the outcome of the revised membership structure and how it will be taken forward.
