BDA opposes publication of addresses in GDC Register

The British Dental Association (BDA) has indicated it will oppose publication of any registrants’ address information in the General Dental Council’s (GDC) public register. The GDC has set up a consultation which provides two options for this change: showing registrant names and GDC number only, or showing registrant names, GDC number and the town in which they are registered.

Helen Falcon appointed MBE

The Queen’s Birthday Honours list contained only one award to a member of the dental community. Helen Falcon, who recently retired as postgraduate dean for dental education and training for Thames Valley, was appointed MBE. She was also chair of the UK Committee of Postgraduate Dental Deans and Directors (COPDEND).

Government raising the drawbridge to health professions

The British Dental Association (BDA) has responded to government plans to cut NHS bursaries in England. Paul Blaylock, Chair of the BDA’s Students Committee, said: “The government seems intent on raising the drawbridge to the health professions. Ditching the bursary will yield minimal savings for the treasury, but have a massive impact the next generation of health professionals.”

Faculty launches updated clinical examination and record-keeping guidelines

The Faculty of General Dental Practice (UK) has launched the 3^rd edition of its authoritative publication Clinical Examination and Record-Keeping, the first update to the guidelines since 2009.The new edition introduces a new structure, whereby an A grade recommendation is aspirational and not considered essential to good patient care, B is a basic requirement, and C is conditional upon circumstances.

DMello GDC hearing set for August

Despite reports in the local press that Desmond D’Mello has applied to have his name removed from the Register, a hearing concerning his Fitness to Practise and that of his dental nurse Caroline Surgey is scheduled to start on 8 August 2016. The case is expected to conclude by 2 September 2016.

Survey shows widespread neglect of toothbrushing

Four in ten British people are not brushing their teeth at least once a day yet admit to being too self-conscious to show their teeth according to a new survey. Those aged between 26-34 were the worst at caring for their teeth, with over half not brushing at least once a day (50.87%) whilst the most conscious 'brushers' are the over 55 age group (68%). Regional results have been reported in some local papers
