The single-handed dentistry model may be a thing of the past in the UK, according to the latest NASDAL (National Association of Specialist Dental Accountants and Lawyers) Benchmarking Report which has just been released and shows a decrease of almost 12% in profits for such practices in two years. A new review has found that dental patients with substance use disorders are more likely to have tooth decay and periodontal disease than the general population, but are less likely to receive dental care. These findings mirror those of poorer oral health those with severe mental illness, eating disorders and alcohol use disorders. It was published online in the scientific journal Addiction.
The British Dental Industry Association (BDIA) has appointed Edmund Proffitt, currently their Policy and Public Affairs Director, as the new Chief Executive, from 10th April. He takes over from Tony Reed, who has been responsible for running the Association for over 20 years.

NHS England has announced that it has promised help for GPs ‘struggling to cope’ with the rising cost of indemnity payments so that they can offer greater access for patients. The first payments from the GP Indemnity Support Scheme are set to be paid to GP practices to further offset average indemnity inflation. No such scheme has been offered to GDPs.
It has been announced that Crispian Scully has died at the age of 71. He was Emeritus Professor of Special Needs Dentistry and for many years was of Dean of the Eastman Dental Institute in London (1993-2008), gaining the Queen’s Award for Higher and Further Education in 2002/2003 - the first in dentistry. Among many awards he was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE).
