A former dentist treated 1,500 patients while she was unregistered the GDC told a magistrates court. Eleni Kalamara pleaded guilty to five charges of carrying out dentistry illegally following an investigation and prosecution by regulators the General Dental Council. She was fined £500 for each offence, £2,500 in total, and ordered to pay court costs of £2,218.
The British Dental Association has announced Tristen Kelso as its new Northern Ireland Director, following the recent retirement of Claudette Christie. Tristen joins the BDA from leading public affairs agency Stratagem, where he served as health lead for four years, overseeing accounts ranging from Cancer Focus NI and the British Heart Foundation, to community providers such as Specsavers.
Six to fifteen percent of patients develop an inflammatory response in the years after receiving a dental implant, caused by bacteria destroying the soft tissue and the bone around the implant. In future, patients will benefit from a quick and affordable method assessing whether they carry such bacteria: using a chewing gum based diagnostic test.
Dental nurse Sally Hague, who formerly worked for disgraced dentist, Desmond D'Mello has been suspended indefinitely by the GDC, following criticism of her cross infection control. The panel heard that Mrs Hague's failings were ‘serious and significant’. They said an indefinite suspension was ‘appropriate and proportionate’.
