Implant Pioneer Dr Stephen Jacobs Dies

Dental FX,  one of Glasgow’s premier dental practices, has announced with enormous sadness the death of its founder and a renowned implantologist Dr Stephen Jacobs.

GDPUK understands that Mr Jacobs, who was born in 1963, died after a ’heroic battle with illness’.

Well known to many in the dental profession, Dr Jacobs, who qualified at Birmingham in 1985,  was regarded as a ’pioneer’ for his contribution to the delivery and development of implants.

Paying tribute to its founder and inspiration,  Dental FX’s website chronicles how, following qualification,  Stephen had launched his career in general dental practice in London before moving to Glasgow in 1990.

’Beginning with a simple request from one patient, he started a career in implant dentistry in 1991 when from that moment, dental implants remained his passion, and he placed and restored in excess of over ten thousand implants, and also carried out more than 1,000 sinus grafts.

’In the early 90’s, where, in the UK, there was a dearth of formal training programs in dental implantology, his training was carried out in the USA and Europe, where he continually travelled, to work closely with, and learn from, mentors, bringing these world leaders in the field, back to his practice for further training. He was regarded as an educator, and mentored many dentists, enabling them to progress their careers in implantology and private dentistry.’

Dr Jacobs lectured extensively on all aspects of dental implantology throughout the United States, Asia, Continental Europe and the UK and played a key role in the development of the Astra Tech EV Implant System. He was a key opinion leader for Osstell, the device that measures implant stability.

A past President of the Association of Dental Implantology and a committee member of the American Academy of Osseointegration,  he was the UK Ambassador for AO, was a founding board member of PEERS UK, and is the past scientific chairman of the ADI. He was also ’committee chair’ for the AO Global Program Development, where he oversaw all the non-American activities of the Academy, across the other continents.

In 2016  he was the second ever UK clinician to be awarded a ’Fellowship’ of the Academy of Osseointegration.

A statement from the Association of Dental Implantology (ADI) hailed Dr Jacobs as ‘an exceptional human being who made a positive impact on all those he met’.

It read: ‘Not only was Stephen a highly respected, highly regarded and celebrated colleague but also a dear friend to many at the ADI and the wider dental community. His presence brightened our lives. His kindness, dedication and smile touched us all, leaving an indelible mark in our minds and hearts.

‘A consummate professional, Stephen embodied everything the ADI stands for. His humour and endearing smile will be sorely missed. We were lucky to have him with us.’

The ADI statement expressed the sentiments of all who knew Stephen Jacobs as it sent ’deepest condolences and heartfelt sympathy to his three daughters and family’, as does GDPUK, its’ team and its’ readers.
