BDA demands clarity from GDC - or else

The BDA has told the GDC – ‘come clean, or we'll seek court order’. Mick Armstrong, Chair of the PEC, said: “From the start the GDC has stubbornly refused to disclose the key information behind its planned fee hike. We’ve sought reasonable clarity but all we have been left with is a growing list of unanswered questions. Well today we couldn’t be clearer - the GDC has to come clean or we will seek a court order.”
The British Dental Association (BDA) has told the General Dental Council (GDC) that it will seek a court order to secure access to evidence that underpins the regulator’s proposal to raise the annual registration fee (ARF) by 64%.
The GDC has recently commissioned a report from accounting giant KPMG to test the assumptions underpinning its ARF consultation. Last week the GDC agreed to a BDA lawyers’ request that it would share the KPMG report when it is finalised.
However, the beleaguered dental regulator has failed to provide answers to other questions in an exchange of legal letters with the BDA which could see it facing judicial review proceedings. The GDC has steadfastly refused to disclose key information – including the instructions handed to KPMG.
Mick Armstrong, Chair of the British Dental Association’s Principal Executive Committee, said:
"From the start the GDC has stubbornly refused to disclose the key information behind its planned fee hike. We’ve sought reasonable clarity but all we have been left with is a growing list of unanswered questions. Well today we couldn’t be clearer - the GDC has to come clean or we will seek a court order. The GDC has options. It can still change tack and avoid unnecessary legal action. We, however, will not waver in our determination to secure proportionate, fair and affordable regulation.”
