Recent research on sugar free confectionery, published in the BDJ, finds that in general, sugar-free products may help prevent dental caries. However, if they contain acidic additives, it may increase the probability of demineralising enamel, thus causing dental erosion. |

A Which? investigation has found that some dentists fail to carry out basic examinations, spend limited time with patients and provide inappropriate treatment plans. Only 20 practices were investigated, ten NHS and ten private. Eleven of twenty visits rated poor or very poor.

Bridge2Aid gathered over 550 friends and supporters of the charity together at this years’ BDTA Dental Showcase for their Party and Casino night and are delighted to have raised over £3000 towards emergency dental care in Tanzania. Bridge2Aid has also endorsed the ‘Heart Your Smile’campaign. |

At a recent meeting of the charity Health Watch, Consultant Orthodontist Keith Isaacson, was elected as Chairman. Keith has been a member of Health Watch virtually since its inception in 1992. Its aim is to ensure that media coverage of evidence-based medical treatment is accurate.

The Care Quality Commission (CQC) has warned Dr Setumo Madiehe that improvements must be made to the practice at 7 West Street, Congleton, Cheshire. It is thought that this is the first time CQC has taken such action. The practice could be closed if improvements are not made. The local PCT has also expressed concerns about the practice. |

Two new studies claim to show links between mouth hygiene,gum disease and cardiovascular events. Researchers in Taiwan found that dental patients who had their teeth cleaned and scaled professionally had reduced risks of heart attack and stroke, while researchers in Sweden found that the type of periodontal disease may predict degree of risks for heart attack, stroke and heart failure.
