NHS dentistry comes to supermarket

 

Britain’s first NHS dental practice located within a supermarket opened at Tesco Extra store in Corstorphine, Edinburgh.It was opened by Lib Dem Councillor Paul Edie who said: “There’s a crying need for NHS dentistry not just here but throughout the whole of Scotland. I’m delighted that we’ve got a new NHS practice here and over 1,200 people queuing up to get in.”

GDC wants ideas on direct access

The General Dental Council (GDC) wants to hear views as it considers whether patients should be allowed direct access to different types of dental professionals. The GDC is now considering whether to allow ‘direct access’ for all patients. This would mean that patients could see other members of the dental team without seeing a dentist first, for example a dental hygienist or therapist.

Surprise in many quarters at nominations for BDA PEC

Surprise has been expressed from many about some of those who have put themselves forward for election to the BDA’s new Principal Executive Committee (PEC). Names such as Susie Sanderson, Alison Lockyer and Paul Langmaid, who many assumed had no aspirations for high office at the BDA. Another surprise is that there were no nominations for the North West.

Welsh Lib Dem leader concerned over dental access

Welsh Lib Dems leader Kirsty Williams AM has said that only 37% of dentists in Wales are accepting new NHS patients. She said in the Welsh Assembly:said: “Although the new dental contract was supposed to improve access to NHS dentists for all, the worrying truth is that NHS dentistry in Wales is still far from a universal public service.”

FGDP(UK) elects next dean

Dr Trevor Ferguson has been elected to be Dean of the Faculty of General Dental Practice (UK). He will take over from Russ Ladwa in June. The Faculty Dean is responsible for providing clinical leadership and promoting the Faculty’s strategy and policies in the professional and public arenas. Also elected were two Vice-Deans, Lawrence Mudford for a second successive term and Naresh Sharma for the first time.

Dental contracts to rise by 0.5%

The Health Secretary, Andrew Lansley has agreed a national uplift for GDS contracts and PDS agreements in England of 0.5%. This is in line with the Government’s policy of no increase to net GDP pay this year. The rise is largely to fund pay increases for practice staff earning less than £21,000 a year, again in line with the Government's public sector pay policy.

Questions raised over DPA viability

Although the link-up between the Dental Professionals Association and CODE has been called off owing to opposition from members, the proposed special meeting on 21 April will still go ahead, to discuss ways of rescuing the Association. In an email to members, acting Chairman, Reg Short, said the DPA had been ‘trading insolvently’ for some years and there had been a steady decline in membership.

Breaking news: CODE takeover of DPA stalled

News has broken this evening [April 19th] on GDPUK that the plan for CODE to take over the management of the Dental Professionals Association [DPA] has been called off.

The special meeting of the DPA this weekend in London will still be taking place.

More news will follow as soon as it is available.

BDA opens elections for top committee

The BDA has called for nominations to its new Principal Executive Committee (PEC). The committee, which will replace the current Representative Body and Executive Board, will assume overall responsibility for BDA policy and governance. PEC members will also be the legally responsible directors of the Association. Those interested in standing for election are invited to submit a completed nomination form and personal supporting statement by Friday 23 April 2012.
