Tim Thackrah, practice principal at Elmsleigh House Dental Clinic in Farnham, is recovering from his exertions after raising £5,500 for charity in a sponsored climb of Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest peak in Africa. Though rewarding, the climb proved to be a tough challenge that left him exhausted. “That will teach me for climbing mountains and going where there is limited oxygen,” he says.

The final member of of the British Dental Association’s (BDA’s) Principal Executive Committee (PEC) has been elected a closely-contested by-election in the north west of England. Dr Shimberg is a general dental practitioner in Worsley Village, Manchester. He has been a GDP since qualifying from Liverpool Dental School in 1971. He is well known on GDPUK.

Not only does the Department of Health have a new secretary of state, Jeremy Hunt MP for South West Surrey, but the three other Commons ministers have been changed. They are LibDem Norman Lamb MP for North Norfolk, Tory Dr Dan Poulter MP for Central Suffolk and North Ipswich and Tory Anna Soubry, MP for Broxtowe. Only Earl Howe remains of the old team. Responsibilities have not yet been allocated.

| Scientists claim the use of bacteria found on seaweed to see more effective results in the fight against tooth decay rather than any of the branded toothpastes. A team of dentists and scientists from Newcastle University are developing a new product from a marine microbe to protect dentures, teeth and gums from bacteria in the mouth.

Dr John Mooney has received Life Membership from the British Dental Association (BDA). Dr Lester Ellman has been awarded a BDA Fellowship. They and twelve others will receive their awards in November at a ceremony in London

| A new survey from the American Dental Association (ADA) shows that Americans seriously need to clean up their act when it comes to oral health. The survey shows that Americans' average score was a 'D' in the survey's range of 'true or false' questions, which included questions like how often should teeth be cleaned, what causes cavities and the age of a child's first dentist visit.

Thousands of patients have been caught conning the NHS in Scotland and the number is rising every year. New figures revealed more than 15,000 cases where patients had claimed free treatment to which they were not entitled from NHS dentists and opticians. Counter Fraud Services (CFS) investigators recovered £538,000 from these patients, but there are fears the problem is much greater.

| The Department of Health has responded to the recent OFT report into dentistry. It acknowledges that the vast majority of patients are happy with their dental treatment and that the majority of dentists behave ethically.PCTs will dentists misleading patients about availability of NHS care. It welcomes the recommendations on better direct access and improved information for patients. |
