More ‘unsatisfactory’ treatment in Scotland

Inspectors have uncovered a huge drop in the standard of dental care provided in Scotland’s Grampian health board, despite a government drive to improve services. New figures show the number of “completely unsatisfactory” cases at NHS Grampian rose from about one in 100 in 2010 to only one in six last year.

Hospital dental admissions rise in Cumbria

Eric Rooney, Consultant in Dental Public Health, has commented on the ‘huge rise’ in hospital admissions because of dental problems has been reported in Cumbria. The number of adults and children being admitted to hospital with bad teeth there has risen by almost 25 per cent. Figures released show that there were 764 admissions to hospital in 2010/2011. During the same period in the following 12 months, the figure had risen by 23%.

Private dental school cannot start courses

The General Dental Council (GDC) is reported as having not approved courses for the proposed Leicester Dental Teaching Academy, although the University of Buckingham has accredited the £176,000 five-year course. Plans to open the Academy in September have been put on hold until further notice.

BDA celebrates Good Practice Scheme Gold Membership

The British Dental Association is this year marking the first 200 dental practices achieving Gold Membership of its Good Practice Scheme. Practices attain Gold Membership by maintaining Good Practice Scheme member status for ten consecutive years. The achievement is being recognised through a celebratory publication that includes a profile of all practices with Gold Membership.

Suffolk dentist jailed for fraud

A disgraced Suffolk dentist who cheated the NHS out of £78,000 by claiming for 1,700 patients he did not treat, including some who were dead, has been jailed for 18 months. Edmund Jaques, 64, ran a business called Home Dental Care Ltd and travelled to care homes throughout Suffolk, Essex and Cambridgeshire providing dental services for elderly residents who were unable to visit a surgery, Ipswich Crown Court heard.

Mercury test may overestimate exposure from dental amalgam fillings

A common test used to determine mercury exposure from dental amalgam fillings may significantly overestimate the amount of the toxic metal released from fillings, according to University of Michigan researchers. Scientists agree that dental amalgam fillings slowly release mercury vapor into the mouth. But both the amount of mercury released and the question of whether this exposure presents a significant health risk remain controversial.

Assumptions on UDA clawback must not be made

The British Dental Association (BDA) has welcomed a ruling by the NHS Litigation Authority that a primary care trust (PCT) must prove the level of inappropriate claims it is alleging a practice has made, rather than making assumptions based on a snapshot of a limited period of time or number of patients. Dr John Milne described the ruling as ‘a victory for common sense.’

Heraeus sells dental business

The German precious metals firm Heraeus is selling its dental business as platinum group metals fall out of favour. The business group will be acquired by Mitsui, a listed chemicals group, which says it intends to retain all employees of the business.
